Summary
An engine-driver marries his landlady’s daughter. In poor health she leaves Drakeport for Lewminster and is burned to death in a fire at a theatre. The heartbroken engine-driver holds to the local superstition that the soul of the dead adopt the form of a butterfly. Following a protest at a sermon on God’s loving providence, he is committed to an asylum.
