The Carol

On Christmas night in Veryan parish, the farmer’s daughter, aged five, creeps into the ‘chall’ or cow-house to see if the cows will pray at midnight as her nurse had foretold. On awaking in the early hours, with the sounds of dancing coming from the farmhouse, she insists on the cow-hand taking her to Laban, in the upper field, to know if he had seen the ‘angel of the Lord’. Suddenly the scene attains to a perfect harmony of man, nature and the divine.
